The Author Spotlight series featured on this blog showcases writers and their work. Writing can be a fulfilling but lonely journey - so why not have some fun and make a few friends along the way? Let’s get to know Jeffrey Martin Botzenhart (@JBotzenhart):
What inspired you to start writing?
I was inspired to start writing as a way to escape the bullying I suffered in junior high and high school. Writing stories became my safe place.
What are common traps/mistakes for aspiring writers?
I think a common trap for aspiring writers might be listening too much to the advice of others and not following their gut instincts and heart in writing the story they want to tell.
What is something you loved but had to edit out of this book that was like sawing off a limb (isn’t writing fun)?
There was a scene at a country carnival that I edited out of the 4th book of the series. I used that scene for a different book.
Tell us a little bit about your story and what inspired you to write “Daybreak”.
Daybreak is about a friendship between a runaway teen suffering Parkinson's disease and a young computer hacker. I was inspired to write this from my interest in virtual reality, which is touched on many times in the series. I also wanted to write a series of diverse characters, which I believe I achieved.
If you had to describe the main character in three words, what would those three words be?
Sebastian is intelligent, fragile, and determined.
